Memtrix - Ethereal
You might not have heard of Memtrix before now, but I guarantee you'll want to get familiar with him, and soon. Ahead of his first proper EP release, called Voodoo, the 18 year old Drum & Bass producer from Kent has released a taster for what lies ahead in the form of a brand new track lifted from it. It's called Ethereal, and it's here to blow your head clean off.
The young producer has only been active for a few short years, and material has been limited, but what there has been, has been good. Like, really good. Feed Me took to Twitter to proclaim how good Memtrix's forthcoming release is, and several of his tracks have been aired on Radio 1/1Xtra. His Limelight/Numbers release initially captured my attention, and Ethereal continues in the same vein as those two tracks.
Ethereal is absolutely massive, but it's a testament to his production skills that the track never gets bogged down, and it feels very clean. Nice little touches throughout make it stand out from similar tracks. The high synth over the opening massive chords starts to slowly detune - at this point, you know shit's going down. The buildup is briefly and cleverly interrupted by a small 'beep'... and then you're thrown straight back in, just trying to frantically keep your head up to catch a breath before the drop totally submerges you.
My one criticism would be that it's quite similar to his other tracks. At this point in his output, that's not so much of a problem, as we haven't heard a great deal from him yet. If we're having this discussion again in a year's time? That's when it becomes an issue, and I hope that he's able to develop his sound before people become fatigued by it.
A strong track from what will undoubtedly be a strong release, Ethereal ticks all the right boxes for people wanting high quality Drum & Bass. No word on a firm release date yet as far as I'm aware (it was previously meant to be March...), but look out for it dropping soon.
