Nero - Touch You (Preview)
Nero's campaign for their forthcoming album is definitely starting to ramp up now. Following on from their first single from the upcoming release, Satisfy, the trio switch it up with a brand new track called Touch You. The track emerged in a mix uploaded to Soundcloud by Nero themselves to promote Satisfy.
It's clear both from the first two tracks we've been treated to that if nothing else, there'll definitely be more experimentation with tempo on album number two, details of which have yet to be revealed. The attractive thing about Nero is the work they've done to pioneer new sounds within EDM, particularly within Dubstep, where they've been able to use their background to create new sounds - both Daniel and Joe are classically trained, and evidence comes to the fore in almost all of their work. You need look no further than the epic 'dubstep symphony', Symphony 2808 that they wrote and had performed by a live orchestra. Their unique sound arrived as a breath of fresh air when they hit the big time in 2011, when EDM exploded and there was a deluge of monotonous tracks and a dearth of exciting material.
It would be fair to say, though, that Touch You is almost a complete departure from anything the trio have done before.
Despite vocalist Alana Watson now being a permanent third member of the dance act, her smooth vocals that have become a staple of the dance act's releases are nowhere to be found here. Instead, we're presented with a thumping, four on the floor track, that doesn't even contain any of the signature gritty synths or wobbling basslines we're now accustomed to.
It's still recognisably Nero, though. The pioneering clearly hasn't stopped, and there's plenty here to enjoy. Slightly sinister vocal samples are used subtly and intermittently, and the clever change of key in the middle section through the addition of a fantastically well thought out sequence of chords layered over the top of the existing beat could only come from them.
Whilst it probably won't garner as much attention as Satisfy did, Touch You is one more reason to be excited about Nero's forthcoming new album. It's not as strong as that first track, but it shows a willingness from the duo of Daniel and Joe to keep trying new things. Hopefully Nero's second album will be a worthy follow-up to 2011's Welcome Reality when it drops later this year.
The Octopus doesn't think it's fair to review tracks based on rips or previews, so he'll review this track upon it's official release.
