It's a good week for sharks this week. There's the premiere of Sharknado 2 (hands up, who can't wait?), and now there's this, a new track from Stephen Walking, Shark City. Unlike Sharknado 2, though, Shark City isn't crap*. Far from it, in fact, as the new single from the Vancouver-based producer is a fresh slice of tropical-infused, downtempo magic.
Find out more about why Shark City should be added to your must-hear list, below.
Shark City is an odd one to place if all you're concerned about is genre. Monstercat have it labelled as glitch-hop, but in truth, there's very little hip-hop influence to be found aside from the tempo. Instead, what Walking, real name Mike Toope, has created here is an entirely original work that simply can't be bound by any genre, and that draws upon many different styles as influences.
It begins with fantastic percussion work that gives the track opening a really tropical feel (which would fit with the name). From there, there's sultry piano work and experimentation with bass and minimalism in the first, exotic drop. Everything builds up to the second drop, where the whole track really kicks off in an explosion of retro synth work and formant synthetic vocals that really bring the whole track to life (it reminds me in some ways of Pendulum's Girl In The Fire, which employed a similar effect).
Shark City is a fantastically creative track, and Mike deserves applause for continuing to push boundaries and for crafting a totally unique style. It's a track that you ought not to miss.
*Yes, I know Sharknado's meant to be terrible (you should seriously check out the second one if you haven't already - it's hilarious).
