#TBT - Blast From The Past - Week 3

The Octopus gets incredibly excited by new music, and we’re constantly on the lookout to bring you the best of it. In fact, the whole electronic scene is very ‘of-the-moment’, and this can make even the best tracks seem somewhat disposable. Well, no more! EO is taking a stand, and every Thursday, we’ll present to you an album, song or artist that you’ve probably forgotten about. It may be from a few years ago, or even just a few weeks ago, but every Thursday there’ll be some old, forgotten treasure - y’know, the sort of thing that would make you go, “Ahh, I remember that!” if it came up on shuffle. So without further ado, here’s this week’s TBT.

This week: Sub Focus' debut, self-titled album.

It's going to be a fairly quick one this week I'm afraid (as I'm just about to head off to GlobalGathering, where Sub Focus will actually be playing!), but can you believe that it was all the way back in 2009 that we got Sub Focus' debut album? (Nearly) Five years ago! Madness. To find out why it was such a big deal back then, read on.

Yes, after what seemed like a wait that lasted an eternity, in October 2009 Sub Focus, real name Nick Douwma, released his debut album. And it made quite an impact, with many heralding Nick as one of the upcoming stars of D&B.

It had some absolute classics on it. Let The Story Begin remains one of my absolute favourite album openings ever.

Similarly, Rock It, to this day, remains one of my favourite D&B tracks. Channeling Daft Punk's Robot Rock with the opening guitar section (I was never sure if that was intentional or not - I would very much assume so), it's an absolute belter of a track, and it's the song that introduced me to Sub Focus in the first place, so naturally it occupies a special place for me.

And Nick also showed that it wasn't just D&B he could tackle. He also included a couple of incredibly successful house tracks that still retained his infamous wobbles and bass. It'd probably be fair to say that Could This Be Real and Move Higher (certainly the former if not the latter) remain fan-favourites all these years later.

I've only highlighted a few tracks here, but truthfully, there's not a bad one on the entire record. Do yourself a favour and go back and listen to the full album. And if you're a post-Torus fan and you've never had the pleasure of hearing it before, you owe it to yourself to go back and pick up a copy of Sub Focus.

Sub Focus will be playing at this year's GlobalGathering on Friday 25th July. To pick up one of the last remaining weekend tickets for the festival, click here.
