There seems to be no stopping Varien at the minute, as he releases his third new single on Monstercat in as many months. His new track's called Gunmetal Black, and it's the genre defying mix of metal and dubstep we've come to expect by now. Except this time, there's another genre thrown into the mix - Oriental. Intrigued? Head on down to find out more.
In some ways Gunmetal Black is slightly more restrained than Varien's other recent tracks. The kick, notably, is not as frantic, presumably in order to better mesh with the oriental aspects he's selected to include. In a lot of other ways, though, this new track is even more aggressive and spectacular, with the eerie sounds of the far east singing out above pulsing percussion and synths, and then the melt-your-face-off guitar at the drop.
Not many people can successfully juggle so many different genres and elements in one track, but it's a skill that Varien seems to have totally nailed down. You have to wonder for how much longer Nick can keep putting out fantastic tracks like this, but I'll certainly keep enjoying them for as long as he does.
