Stalwart of the electronic Don Diablo has returned to Spinnin to continue his recent run of releases on the prolific label. His latest effort, Back In Time, is a sort of House track that has some Big Room qualities, and is generally just a bit special.
Find out more about it below.
For Back In Time, it fells almost as if Don Diablo has done just that, going back a few years to a time when Vato Gonzales' Badman Riddim was absolutely everywhere. It has a similar vibe, as the drop employs the same sort of horn synths, and it bounces along at quite a pace.
But don't think that means Back In Time is old news, and that it's a horribly derivative track. Far from it, in fact, because in other ways, it's very forward thinking. Though it feels just as ready and primed for the club, it's a bit more intelligent, as Don cleverly adds other things into the mix to turn the track into a thumping House one. Most notably, the Italo style piano adds a touch of class to proceedings, and somehow manages to feel quite futuristic, though it's obviously distinctly retro. The chords are an absolute delight, and turn what could have been a piece of throwaway club nonsense into a far more engaging track.
To the same effect, there's a delightfully dreamy and laid-back middle section, which serves as a contrast to the rest of the track, but also serves to display Don's technical/writing abilities, as he ably switches from very straight rhythms to triplets. It could easily have felt like it didn't belong here, but Don has convincingly stitched the whole thing together. The result isn't some sort of unholy monster, but rather a very slick House track that's sure to delight any crowd, and get them jumping.
With a "Hnnngh!", the track drops, and though I mentioned above that it's slightly reminiscent of Vato Gonzales' 2011 effort, it's clear that this is an altogether better use of similar techniques. Don's attention to detail is what really brings this to life - there's a few brief pauses for a snap of a finger, before the track roars to life again. It's subtle, but oh-so-clever.
I really don't have many bad things to say about this one, and in fact, I've had it in heavy rotation all week. Back In Time seems an odd choice of name in many ways, as although some of the track's elements do come from a cursory glance over the shoulder, the way in which they're stitched together has created something far more than the sum of its parts. Play it at your next party - I guarantee it'll go off.
