The result is an entirely different beast. Oh, and it's a free download. But is it as good as the original? Read on to find out.
Despite being at roughly the same tempo, I See MONSTAS' remix of circles feels incredibly different, and far more laid-back - initially at least. It's not as euphoric, but the fact it's been scaled back considerably allows the track to breathe a lot more, and exude a beauty that the original perhaps couldn't achieve due to it's bombastic nature.
The key has been changed, which has led to a lowering in pitch of the vocals, giving them an incredibly different vibe - something that's becoming a bit of a theme throughout this review. If anything, they sound even more soulful here, but also more subtle.
Don't get too comfortable, though; there's some pretty hefty and gritty basslines to contend with here, too. This remix made my whole room shake in a way that the original couldn't.
And then, amongst the bass and the soul, there's the beautiful string passage towards the middle. It's a sensational addition, and it ensures that the one thing that this remix doesn't lose from the original track, is it's heart and sense of wonderment.
Do I think it's better than the original? No. But that's not to say it's a bad reinterpretation, not by any means - I think I've outlined that pretty clearly above. I just think that the original version of Circles is so close to perfection, that anything would struggle to topple it. This new remix comes close, but the other thing is, apart from a shared tempo and name, these two tracks are so different in just about every way that it seems almost unfair to compare them.
That said, I See MONSTAS' should be applauded for the extraordinary work they've done on both tracks. This remix may not be quite as good as the original, but at the incredibly reasonable price of FREE, you'd be mad not to give it a shot.
