Here's something you don't see very often: Rob Swire uploading something to his SoundCloud! And not only that, what we have here is a preview of a brand new track from Knife Party's forthcoming album.
"Surely not," I hear you cry. "It must be a trap!" Well, yes. Yes it is. It would seem Knife Party are branching out to the world of trap - and it would be fair to say that not everyone is enjoying this latest experiment. Boss Mode is the first glimpse of what Knife Party vs Trap will be like.
Well, I say it's a first glimpse, but this track isn't actually new at all. The actual Trap bit at the end of this teaser was debuted as a new Knife Party ID well over a year ago, before their Haunted House EP had even been released. Due to its lack of materialisation on that release, most presumed it to be dead, sent to the ever-burgeoning collection of neglected, unreleased Knife Party tracks.
But apparently, it's still alive and well - albeit it's taken on a bit of a different guise since it last reared it's head. I was very critical of the original ID - it was hopelessly generic, and it really could've been slapped together in 10 minutes by any old Beatport artist. It's encouraging to see, then, that the track has obviously progressed significantly, and in it's new incarnation as Boss Mode, it's become what sounds to be a proper Knife Party banger - it's dark, it's gritty, but most importantly, it's unique. It has Swire and McGrillen's style stamped all over it now, which is what it was sorely lacking before.
Anyway, have a listen to the preview - though do bear in mind that, even with Abandon Ship so close now, the final version will likely be quite different (Rob's already said, for example, that the riff at the beginning could be scrapped). But savour it anyway - it's likely to be one of the very few previews you get before Knife Party's inaugural album drops.
