Knife Party - Resistance

UPDATE 27/8/14: Official stream is now available below, replaces previous one that was removed.

It looked like Knife Party weren't going to make good on their promise to release new single Resistance as a free download today. But about half an hour ago, they cryptically tweeted that their studio had 'sprung a leak'. And lo and behold, Resistance has now 'leaked' all over the internet.

Yes, it looks like the crafty bastards have deliberately leaked their own track. It's definitely real - as if their tweet (embedded below the jump) wasn't enough to confirm that, anyone who's heard their set opener from EDC will know that this is indeed the real deal. No one could create a fake this convincing. Anyway, is it any good? What do you think. Head on down to find out.

From the moment the world heard it for the first time at EDC, we knew that Resistance was something special. It seemed to be a reassurance to fans that no, the album wouldn't be filled with trap and minimal stuff and God-knows-what else, and yes, we're more than capable of still making a massive electro banger, thank-you-very-much.

And now it's here, and it's ready to get all up in yo face. As the synths start to rise, and the texture gets thicker, and the tension increases, you know something big is coming. There's a brief moment of reprieve, and then: "Call that a knife? This is a knife." C'mon, it was only a matter of time before that made it into a Knife Party track. The drop that follows is a veritable assault on your senses, as the lead synth seems to scream at you, and the tight percussion keeps everything thumping along nicely. It hits hard in a way that only Swire and McGrillen have managed to master. Somehow, it all manages to sound incredibly clean, despite the flurry of activity.

The bridge between the two drops offers up something of a surprise, as it becomes almost an entirely different beast, with a slightly more uncertain tonality and Inception-style 'Bwwwaaaarrrrrss' combining to create imagery of a sort of post-apocaliptic world (which, I suppose, ties in nicely with the track's title). It provides a welcome bit of breathing space to follow everything that comes before it.

...aaaand then we're right back into it. Face = melted.

Resistance is, put simply, Knife Party back on form. And to be honest, they hadn't really lost their way that much. Not that I wasn't already, but the duo have just given us one more reason to be excited for Abandon Ship when it finally drops at the end of October. There's no official download link for Resistance, since it was 'leaked', but Knife Party retweeted a link to the track on MediaFire, so I guess that makes it okay for me to give that to you below. Get listening!
