Whilst Calvin Harris seems mostly content to now stay within his comfort zone of pumping out dance/pop tracks (something that he's undeniably good at), he also seems to want to try his hand at every single other genre of electronic music. Acid House, Big Room... and now, straight up House. The Scot has teamed up with Mike Pickering for this new remix of the latest single to be lifted from his album Motion, Pray To God.
The original single is one of the absolute standout tracks of that album; does this remix do it justice? Find out below.
It'd be fair to say that not all of Calvin's experiments with other genres have been a roaring success. Whilst Slow Acid was a huge creative success, Big Room tracks like Overdrive, his collaboration with Ummet Ozcan, were generic in the extreme. How about this collaborative remix of Pray To God, then? Well, it's probably somewhere in the middle.
It's a fine House track, but I'm not so sure it particularly brings anything new and exciting to the table. HAIM's vocal turn remains a highlight, of course, working just as well over a classic House beat as it does over the glorious original. The chords, the piano stabs, they all work well. But does it all come together in a way that trumps the original? Not really, but it does compliment it quite nicely.
If you're looking for a new twist on one of Calvin's best, recent tracks, then this is just fine. This remix with Mike Pickering is a nice House alternative to the original. But if you're wanting something that pushes a few more boundaries, you're probably not going to find it here. No word on an official release for this, but the music video for the original track drops tomorrow.
