Synths? Gone. Beats? Nowhere to be found. Cellos? In. For the new version of Gravity, the original of which is already quickly climbing the charts on iTunes, Fresh has gone totally acoustic. The question is, does it work? I guess you'll have to listen, and then head below to find out.
If you were in any doubt as to how beautiful Ella Eyre's vocals are, this new rendition of Gravity should totally convince you. The bulk of the track is a simple, piano-reduction of the original track, which allows the aforementioned vocals to really take centre stage, with all glossy production stripped away. I could be wrong, but I think this is also a gentler, more reflective vocal take than the one used in the original, which is another nice touch that helps add to the atmosphere the track relies on.
This delicate rendition of the original, thumping track, also employs a full string section, which just adds further gravitas and creates satisfying swells in intensity throughout. It all builds towards a sumptuous finale - the strings climb the octaves, the piano picks up a gear, but it all still manages to remain wonderfully understated.
I've given DJ Fresh a bit of a hard time in the past, for making a lot of what I personally would deem overly-commercial, mediocre singles. But with Gravity, he's onto a winner, and this acoustic version proves that he is indeed a very capable musician, as well as a slick producer. The original track already had beauty within - here, that beauty is laid totally bare for all to hear, and the effect is wonderful.
I would maybe even go so far as to say that this betters the original Gravity. But I'll let you make your own mind up. There's no official release date announced for the new acoustic version; you'll have to make do with the Soundcloud player above for now. But you can buy the equally great original on iTunes now, the links are below.
