Pay No Mind is the latest cut to be lifted from Hugo's forthcoming debut album, Adventure, and you can find out what makes it so bloody good - below.
In a recent interview that Madeon gave to Digital Spy (which you should go and read, by the way, it's great), the producer stated that his process had evolved to focus more on writing great songs, than simply clever production. That was evident from last single You're On, and is even clearer here.
Every note of Pay No Mind drips with the care and attention you'd expect from Madeon - it's an extraordinarily colourful track, but that colour now comes from the talented musicians involved (the track also features guitar licks from Two Door Cinema Club's Sam Halliday) and the songwriting prowess displayed, rather than merely being a product of some nice synths.
Of course, as you'd expect, Madeon's production is still absolutely immaculate, and he continually amazes me with with his technical skills. A section featuring a talkbox-like solo is definitely a highlight here, and creative flourishes like this are what makes the young musician stand out from his contemporaries.
Everything just works perfectly here; Michael Angelakos' vocals are perfectly suited to the track, and his unique voice adds further interest to what would've already been an amazing track without them. Unfortunately, I personally feel that the vocals do sometimes get a bit lost in the mix, as there's so much going on.
But that's a very minor quibble, and it certainly isn't going to stop me from proclaiming that Pay No Mind is an early contender for song of the year. If this and previous single You're On are indication, Adventure could well join it as album of the year. Get excited - it drops on March 30th.
