Stephen Walking - Dads In Space

It's time to add a little fun to your Friday, courtesy of Stephen Walking, who today released his brand new track Dads In Space on Monstercat.

Everything about this track just exudes awesomeness. The name, the album art, it all adds to the retro vibe that Dads In Space effortlessly pulls off. It's like being transported straight back to the 80s, in the best possible way.

Walking has totally nailed the retro aesthetic that he was aiming for. The bright chords and antiquated synth sounds are sure to spread a smile of joy all over your face, as you long for a time when things were simpler. You can totally imagine your dad's imagination being soundtracked by this tune in days gone by, when, as a child, he daydreamed about becoming an astronaut, and adventuring out into the infinite expanse that is outer space, never to return again.

Makes me teary-eyed just thinking about it. *sniff*

In fact, the only major giveaway that Dads In Space hasn't come straight from an old video game or TV show, is the bassline, which, as you'd expect from Stephen Walking, is extremely tight and creative. It injects a touch of the modern, ensuring that the track doesn't just ape the 80s style, but also offers something new.

Indeed, Dads In Space, for all its retro charm, still carries Walking's inimitable style. It's quite difficult to put your finger or what that is, as his music is hard to categorise genre-wise. But I suspect what it is, is that Walking creates a fantastic aesthetic with each of his releases. I mentioned about the album art and name earlier - every detail is picked with the utmost care, and woven into one another, so that each track becomes a sort of mini-experience in its own right. It was the same story for Shark City, one of his singles from last year.

My only real quibble with his latest effort is that it does take a while to get underway. But when it does, you realise it was worth the wait. Close those Word documents and put on your cardboard space helmet - the weekend is here, it's time for an adventure.

'Dads In Space' will also appear on Monstercat's 21st compilation album, Perspective, released 18th March. Preorder here.
