You wait six years for new material from The Prodigy, and then three new tracks come at once! ...well, a few weeks apart, but whatever. It's an exciting time to be a Prodigy fan, as their forthcoming album The Day Is My Enemy looks to recapture some of the aggression and energy that didn't quite manifest in Invaders Must Die (itself still a very good album).
The latest cut from the new record, Wild Frontier, serves as a follow-up to the recently released album title track, which was widely hailed as a triumph. Can this latest effort continue their run of quality releases?
It would probably fair to say that Wild Frontier is slightly more accessible than The Day Is My Enemy, which was a relentless, pounding journey of agro. Wild Frontier, on the other hand, certainly wouldn't seem out of place on the radio.
And that's not necessarily a criticism. Things definitely get more than a little crazy with Wild Frontier too - it feature the same driving drum beat that has just become second nature to Liam Howlett, which are, in some sections, complimented by grinding bass, squealing synths, and... a howling monkey. The monkey terrifies me ever so slightly.
It pulsates, it's got an instant vocal hook, and the whole thing is just bursting with energy.
It's clear that The Prodigy have once again hit their stride with this new collection of material just from the first few tracks, as each one has been very different to the last. We can definitely look forward to a varied collection when the album drops on March 30th.
As for Wild Frontier: it never quite hits the heights of *that* title track (man, that is going to go OFF live), but it's still a fantastic effort in its own right, and further showcases Howlett's ability to effortlessly craft a massive tune. It's quite a different vibe to anything they've done before, but that's absolutely a good thing, as it shows a willingness to experiment and branch out that the band have perhaps been lacking in recent years.
You can listen to and enjoy Wild Frontier up above. And you should definitely watch the video, which is absolutely fantastic - it's definitely my video of the year so far.
